Adviser Risk & Challenge

Good advice does not always mean agreeing with the client. There are occasions when an adviser believes that a client’s preferred course of action could materially affect their objectives, yet challenging that decision may itself feel uncomfortable.

The Adviser Risk & Challenge framework provides a structured way to think through that tension. It considers three competing perspectives: client risk, relationship risk and adviser risk, and asks the adviser to apply professional judgement rather than allowing fear of conflict, complaint or losing the client to dominate the decision.

The framework combines the Risk Triangle with an adviser self-check, a simple Courage Test and five possible professional responses: Support, Educate, Challenge, Escalate or Decline. The CARE principles underpin the approach: Challenge with care, Awareness of risk, Respect for the client and Evidence-led advice.

The purpose is not to encourage challenge for its own sake. It is to help advisers recognise when challenge is appropriate, approach it thoughtfully, and remain focused on better long-term client outcomes.
